Only the filthy rich or a somewhat loose punter will have the required minerals to take some of the prices regarding the more established England players making the squad for the European Championships.

The likes of Ashley Cole, Joe Hart and Wayne Rooney, despite his suspension, all are around the 1-66 mark to make it onto the plane to Poland and Ukraine and are a ludicrous betting proposition. Before every major tournament it seems as though England always have a couple of injury scares to contend with and do you really want to take a skinny price on one of the big players staying fit.

You’re a braver man than me if you so.

There is some real value to be had in this market however, starting with the chances of Daniel Sturridge making the squad.

The Chelsea man is a young precocious talent who has the ability to make something happen out of nothing and let’s be honest apart from Rooney, England aren’t best served in that department.

He has made most England squads since the turn of the year and has the added pull of being able to play both wide in a three man forward line or alone through the middle. It’s that flexibility that makes the 4/6 available on him making the squad look very appealing.

Another player that should and deserves to make to be on that plane is Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick, who had been immense in the second half of the season and is by far the best ball playing midfielder England have at their disposal. Surely he’s a better option than Gareth Barry?

The 6-4 on him making the squad is gigantic value.

There is also one player that is taken to a tournament as a bit of a wild-card – Theo Walcott in 2006 a prime example.

His understudy at Arsenal, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain (7/4) seems to be the player everyone is banging the drum for this season but he may just be too inexperienced.

A better punt to make the squad could be Swansea winger Scott Sinclair (33-1), who has been excellent for the Swans this season and rumour has it Harry Redknapp is a huge fan of his talents.

If he gets the job, Sinclair should come into the running to make the squad.
